Countdown to Amicalola: Monday Morning Quarterback

I was very happy to let my trekking poles rest for a bit at this juncture along the Appalachian Trail. The trail ahead is where my brother and I hiked up (always up) from Lake Winfield Scott. The rocks in the lower left are part of a staircase marking the "fun" approach of the Appalachian Trail up to Blood Mountain, highest point on the trail in Georgia.

Upon first glance, this weekend was kind of a bust.  I went up every day from Saturday to Monday, which was certainly not my goal. There are many explanations for this, but the biggest one I think is my breaking of the "no food after 8:00" rule. True, even on the day I adhered to that I still went up. However, considering this was Super Bowl Sunday, and the amount of food I consumed in the two-three hours leading up to 8:00 was immense, I consider that 0.8 a victory, considering it was better than the two previous days.

Am I disappointed in this weekend? Of course. However, there is plenty for me to be optimistic about. I stuck to my boundary I set on one a day known for overeating. I got out and hiked, including some distance on a steep and foreboding hill. Oh, and I got to test out my microspikes a bit yesterday.

If I were looking for a large amount of snow to test in, this wasn't the case in southern Vermilion County*. We only got 1-2 inches, and what was there was melting most of the day thanks to the temperatures hovering just above freezing, and rain falling much of the time. However, the slushy snow that was there created enough of a slippery mess to give me some experience using the traction equipment. I never once felt in danger of losing my footing due to ice or slippery snow. The only problem I ran into was wet snow bunching up on my right heel, which I didn't realize until I made it back to my parents' patio. This resulted in a precarious walk where every step seemed like it was rolling my ankle awkwardly. Having had this test run in mostly innocuous conditions, I'll know next time to check my heel for built up snow. The last thing I need is a broken ankle because I was wearing microspikes to prevent me from breaking my ankle on ice.

* I'm well aware that the weather was a bit...different up in the greater Schaumburg area. Looks like there won't be any shortage of snow to try out my spikes with up there for a while.
