Hiking the Lists #5: Grand Sable Dunes and Logslide

Hike: #5
Title: Grand Sable Dunes and Logslide
Location: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Hike List: U.P. Michigan
Difficulty: Easy
Duration of Hike: 30 minutes

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a great place to hike. Not only is the scenery stunning, it has a great variety of trails, in terms of length and difficulty. From short, flat trails less than a mile, to a rugged 42 backpacking trail that is part of the North Country Trail, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.

Today's hike is certainly not a long one, and it is fairly easy. There isn't much to it, just a walk from the parking lot to a sand dune and an overlook of Grand Sable Dunes and Lake Superior. At least if you stick to this trail.

You see, this trail gives you access to the Logslide, a part of the Grand Sable dunes that was used by loggers to slide the giant logs of the northwoods into the lake, where it could be directed towards Grand Marais and the sawmill. Beyond the history of the area, it is also a chance for the adventurous to stretch the length of their hike.

Not me, however, as I am not an idiot. There are several big signs warning you to only attempt the logslide descent (and more importantly, the ascent) if you are in excellent physical shape. The problem isn't going down, which can be done quickly and easily. No, the problem is the climb back up. It's uphill the entire way, very steep, sandy, and without any shade. Even the fittest people might take an hour or so to make the climb. If you are in less than stellar shape, but are looking for a challenge, or just looking for a way to get to the lake itself, there are much better options.
